I have always beenfascinated by all the details you see whileobserving insects. Even more fascinating is that allof those details serve a specific function. Mothernature put careful thought into each pattern, antennae length, number of legs, and coloring. While making some miniature potatoes thisyear I became exhausted as I studied the detailsin a photograph of a real potato. Then I remindedmyself of something I was taught while attendingArt College. Creating art can be about achievingabsolute realism, which has always fascinated me,but it can also be about creating an illusion. Eachskill set is just as complex.I personally opted for creating an illusionfor the viewer. In this method you have to pullout the essence of your subject. What is it thatmakes a potato a potato? It’s controlling that splitsecond when the viewer’s eye latches on to thework of art. In that moment what will they feeland what triggers will that first impression set offin their brain? It’s fascinating really.Of course, you will never have full control ofthis method because each person has differentpast experiences and associations with theenvironment so everyone’s reaction will bedifferent, but it is certainly fun to try!We have a wide variety of creations in this issueand I hope you find joy in all of them. Just as youdo with your minis, each artist has put a piece ofthemselves into their work, which makes them alloriginal treasures.Mandy Groves turns aminiature croquet set into aboxed version.
