Through ever-changingmusic landscapes and cultures, anddevelopments in digital devices for makingand listening to music, the acousticguitar has, in design, remained close ifnot exactly the same as when C.F. Martininvented the x-brace system for steelstring guitars back in the 1850’s.Of course there has been continuousdevelopment in manufacturing as luthiersand guitar companies try to perfect theacoustic guitar and its production, butin overall concept the acoustic guitarremains the same as it always has been, awooden soundbox, with a neck, headstock,bracings, and strings that has helpedartists express their feelings and influenceours for decades. It is the songwriter’scanvas, the musician’s friend, theinstrument you can play softly in the deadof night or make it shout and scream if youso desire. So here’s to the acoustic guitar ingeneral, as well as Alvarez’s 50th birthday.We have some very special instrumentslaunching this year with our 1965 Series,and of course the Grateful Dead Series;it’s their 50th too. But our standardline has also improved, with a focus onthe quality of the finish. It’s thinner andshinier, helping to project tone evenfurther, and make our guitars lookeven prettier.Happy birthday Alvarez! LOUIS, 1965: A YEAR OF INSPIRATION.Frank Sinatra had just played the Peabody Opera House. Themagnificent St Louis Arch had just been completed. And in aquiet part of the city, a company called St. Louis Music had avision. A vision for a line of guitars that could reach out to themusical revolution sweeping the world and inspire a generationof new players.This new line of instruments would become Alvarez Guitars.ALVAREZ BEYONDFor Alvarez, the years to come are a promise of furtherinnovation and excellence. Then–owner ofAlvarez, Gene Kornblum, fused his mastery of marketing and guitarknowledge with the transcendent luthiery of Kazuo Yairi, of Kani,Japan. This union created a culture of constant improvement atAlvarez, one that still exists today.It’s a partnership that has born many successes over the years.St. Louis Music’s ability to put fine instruments in the handsof the world’s greatest players has made Alvarez a globallyrecognized brand, while the craftsmanship and design of KazuoYairi has defined the brand’s quality for many years. Until hispassing in March of 2014, Kazuo would personally sign the neckblock of his Alvarez-Yairi instruments. His son now carries onthat tradition, and the Master Luthiers taught by Kazuo andhis contemporaries continue building amazing guitars. We willmiss Mr. Yairi greatly.
